ELECTROMAGNETIC DETECTION

Alberta Utility Locator

Images showing Utility Locators using their equipment.

Electromagnetic detection is the primary tool used in underground utility locating. It’s a versatile method of locating underground utility lines because it can isolate specific pipes with a direct connection, giving the technician confidence in what pipe is being located. Properly locating underground utilities before ground disturbance will reduce the possibility of damage to the lines, prevent costly mid-project repairs and lower the risk of personal injury.

Our Utility Locators use an EM Scanner to induce electromagnetic signals onto lines below the surface. If they are metal, copper or steel pipes they will conduct an electromagnetic signal (EM fields) and provide an accurate location of where the utility is.

If there is no electromagnetic signal flowing through the line, there is no signal to locate. If there is no signal our technicians can try Ground-Penetrating Radar technology.
