GROUND PENETRATING RADAR

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology uses radio waves to capture images below the surface of the ground. It enables a Utility Locator to pinpoint the location of underground utilities without disturbing the ground. GPR helps locate both conductive and non-conductive lines whereas EM locating is limited to tracing metallic services.

The GPR equipment transmits signals through the ground that reflect off structures below the surface based on their electrical permittivity (the ability to store energy). The GPR equipment records variations in the return signals, then generates images that indicate changes in electrical properties.

WHAT DOES GPR EQUIPMENT DETECT?

Ground Penetrating Radar signals can be used to find a wide range of items such as metal, plastic, PVC, concrete, fiber optic cables and natural materials. GPR’s can be used to detect underground utility lines and pipes as well as buried tanks. It can also detect changes in ground strata, geological features and rock obstructions, air pockets or voids, excavated and back-filled areas, groundwater tables, and bedrock.
